Re: Meme post by Cambridge Councillor Adam Cooper and related social media postings.

After becoming aware of the meme posted by Cambridge City Councillor Adam Cooper and the subsequent social media dialogue, I felt compelled to address this concerning incident. The content shared by Councillor Cooper has understandably caused distress and pain to many families and members of our community, particularly those in the 2SLGBTQ+ community.

I want to state unequivocally that this post does not represent the values of our community regarding gender identity. As someone who has served in a public capacity as both mayor and regional councillor, I understand the profound responsibility public officials have to foster an inclusive and safe environment for all residents.

The number one responsibility of anyone in public office is to ensure that all members of our community can live, work, and engage safely. Councillor Cooper’s actions have unfortunately undermined this fundamental principle. The concerns raised by Grand River Pride and other community members are valid and deserve our utmost attention.

I want to reassure all members of our 2SLGBTQ+ community that you are valued, respected, and an integral part of our community’s fabric. This includes supporting everyone’s right to be identified by their chosen pronouns safely and without fear of harm. Respecting an individual’s pronouns is a fundamental aspect of recognizing their identity and dignity.

To those who feel unwelcome or unsafe in our community due to these recent events, please know that the views expressed in Councillor Cooper’s post do not reflect the values of the majority of the citizens of Cambridge, or the Region of Waterloo, as a whole. We are committed to creating a community where diversity is celebrated, and everyone feels at home.

Moving forward, we must use this incident as an opportunity for growth and education. I call on all public officials to recommit themselves to the principles of respect, inclusivity, and dignity for all residents, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.

Cambridge is stronger when we stand united in our diversity. Together, we can build a community where everyone feels safe, respected, and empowered to be their authentic selves.

Respectfully,

Rob Deutschmann
