Cambridge, ON – As the Liberal candidate for Cambridge in the upcoming Ontario provincial election, I am committed to addressing the pressing issue of food insecurity in our community. I fully support the recent initiative proposed by Regional Councillor Doug Craig for a roundtable discussion to find a new location for the Cambridge Food Bank.
If elected as the Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Cambridge, I pledge to actively participate in and support this crucial effort. The Cambridge Food Bank plays a vital role in combating food insecurity, and ensuring its continued operation in a suitable location is paramount to the well-being of our community.
Addressing food insecurity is crucial. As a former regional councillor, I introduced a motion in 2023 that successfully doubled the Region of Waterloo’s 2024 contribution to the Waterloo Region Food Bank to $1.5 million. This increased support also benefits the Cambridge Food Bank, and I am pleased to have supported the continuation of this funding in the current budget.
Cities like Cambridge have become the epicenter of crises in housing and food insecurity, often dealing with the consequences of provincial and federal policies. The influx of international students, for example, has added to these challenges. As your potential MPP, I am dedicated to working collaboratively with all levels of government and social service representatives to find sustainable solutions.
The Cambridge Food Bank has been serving our community for over 38 years, providing not only food assistance but also vital supports for individuals and families. Their work is more critical than ever, with a 45% increase in unique individuals supported since 2022.
If elected, I will bring my experience and commitment to the table, working tirelessly to ensure that the Cambridge Food Bank can continue its essential services from a location that best serves our community’s needs.
Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those facing food insecurity in Cambridge.
